Sermon Title: “A Better Way to Live”
April 1, 2018
When was the last time you were told to “get over it?”
Maybe the pain was just too much. Maybe you didn’t know how to let go. So you heard “get over it.” Honestly, you would have if you could. Perhaps, when life gets tough, we’re not supposed to get over it. What would it look like to move through it?
Question for today: What does the resurrection have to do with me?
We don’t grasp something about death that we grasp about life.
Death is not just a destination, death has degrees.
Sometimes death gets a hold of your life.
Question for today: What does the resurrection have to do with me?
Luke 23:32-43
Leviticus 14:14
The cross marks us as forgiven.
Scripture: Luke 23:32-43
Market research currently estimates the U.S. self-improvement industry to be worth $9.9 billion. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself, has anyone stopped to ask if there’s a hidden cost to these methods – the books, podcasts, institutes, and seminars – that we’re just trying to ignore? If all the advice worked, would we still need the self-help section at the bookstore, or the life-hack articles that seem to dominate our newsfeeds?
What we find in Jesus is not just another self-improvement list. He doesn’t give us 5 steps to a meaningful life. What he offers is much more transformative and life giving. Through the cross Jesus removes the eternal penalty of death, gives us a new future, and offers us a way to move through our hurt and shame.
Questions for Reflection:
How do you respond to the idea that death has degrees?
In what ways have you attempted to “get over it” on your own?
What is dead within you that is in need of resurrection?
