Who gets the TV remote? Who loads the dishwasher? They may seem like “relationship issues,” but in reality, questions like this are not unique to your relationship. The underlying problem isn’t “relationship issues,” “girlfriend issues,” or “family issues.” It’s far more significant than that. “It’s not you, it’s me” isn’t the start of the breakup, it’s the start of healing.
Other New Testament Passages with specific instructions on romantic relationships: Hebrews 13, Colossians 3, Ephesians 5, 1 Peter 3

Paul understands that your spouse is not your Savior.

Our relationships are the context for our spiritual growth, don’t waste it.

If you’re single:
– May be forever, or for just a season- use your time well.
– Becoming like Jesus is a better aspiration than getting married.
– Reject every perspective that encourages selfishness or tells you that you’re incomplete.

If you’re married:
– You most likely have less discretionary time, but you do have the opportunity for your spouse to help you be formed into the image of Christ.
– I need you & I love you are not synonymous.
– If you identity is dependent on your spouse- you can’t love them well.

Our hope is that whatever you relationship status that you position your life to become more centered on Christ.

The line from a movie says, “You complete me”- and we all fell for it! It indicates we are only half a person unless someone else is with us. Whether single or married, our challenge is to become fully who we were created to be. You are made complete in Christ!

Questions for Reflection:

  • What were you taught about marriage? What did you see in the marriages around you as you were growing up and how did this impact you?

  • What challenges are there to being single? To being married?

  • How can we (the Body of Christ) change the perception that God is only looking for people to be married? What other “judgments” do we place when people don’t fit into the box of what we think is God’s ideal Christian?

  • Whether married or single, what are you doing to share the love of Christ with others? What do you feel is God’s calling on using your life to share the gospel?
