Sermon Title: “Context”

Forward
Stories captivate us. We get lost in good book, we become emotionally impacted by a movie, a fable becomes a lesson that will guide the rest of our lives. We are both entertained and educated through story. But a story isn’t just found through pages or pixels, your life is a story. And if you’re unaware of what makes a story compelling, what makes a story important, you’ll likely miss what makes a life worth living. In this series we’ll spend three weeks looking at not how to tell a better story, but how to live a story worth telling.

Title: “Context”

Amusing ourselves to Death (Link)

The failure comes in not understanding context.

4 Levels of Story:

  1. The Conflict
  2. How the Conflict fits into your story
  3. How your story fits into the a larger narrative
  4. How the larger narrative fits into the meta-narrative

4 Levels of Story in Faith:

  1. The Conflict
  2. How the conflict fits into your story
  3. How your story is seen by God
  4. How your story fits into the story God is telling

In every great story, there is a moment where the leading character awakens to their context. Nothing else changes, the circumstances remain the same, but the character now sees them in a new light. This awakening prompts the character to begin living in a new, inspired, passionate way.

Just like stories, our lives have context – circumstances that form the setting of our lives – and like many of those lead characters, we are often asleep to our greater context. Problems arise in our lives because we fail to see the significance of our context. But in 1 Peter 2:1-12 we are reminded of the greater context in which we find ourselves, a story of immense importance, with an ending that has already been written.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How would you describe your current context?

  • Have you had an awakening moment, where you realized how much your context matters in light of the greater story being told?

  • How might the realization that Act 3 has already been written effect the way you live in Act 2?

  • How might God be prompting you to reset your context this week?
