Title: “Hide or Seek”
“And I just wanted to run. Run as far and fast as I could from what I had done. Run from myself. Run from life. Run from what everyone was now thinking. Run from the fact that there was no going back. No undoing this. No repairing the damage… I wanted to escape.”
– Mike Foster (People of the Second Chance. http://www.secondchance.org)
Your past is a master at hide & seek
You may not want to dwell in your past but your past dwells in you. – Miles Adcox
You don’t get to play both hide and seek.
Moses couldn’t find his future while he was running from his past.
We’ll never know what would’ve happened had Moses stayed…but you can find out what would happen if you quit hiding.
“You cannot find all of God with only part of your soul.”
“You may not want to dwell in your past, but your past dwells in you.”- Miles Adcox
Moses is not running from his past, but abandoning his future.
At some point in our lives we’ve all played a game of hide and seek. What is an innocent game for children has the power to become our greatest stumbling block when applied to our faith. Our fear of our past, of the things we have done, cause us to question our identity and hide in embarrassment. We allow that fear to disqualify us, running, like Moses (Exodus 2:11-14), not from our past, but from all that God has for us in our future.
The reality is that we cannot hide from God. Our meager attempts at concealing parts of ourselves only keep us from the fullness of life that is possible, because we cannot find all of God with only part of our soul. By exposing those parts of our past that we would rather hide, we are free to seek the future, because God doesn’t see our past the way that we do. Instead of seeing something that must be kept hidden, God sees potential (Isaiah 49:1-4).
Questions for Reflection:
How do you react to the statement: “You may not want to dwell in your past, but your past dwells in you.” – Miles Adcox
What are the lies that your past has been telling you? How can you begin to reject those lies?
Are there times in your life when you have abandoned your future?
What future do you feel God is inviting you to seek?
