Sermon Title: “Let it go”
April 22, 2018
When was the last time you were told to “get over it?”
Maybe the pain was just too much. Maybe you didn’t know how to let go. So you heard “get over it.” Honestly, you would have if you could. Perhaps, when life gets tough, we’re not supposed to get over it. What would it look like to move through it?
What’s your way of forgiving? How do you extend forgiveness and where did you learn how to forgive?
What seems impossible for you to forgive? To let it go?
– Ask God for discernment and insight on how to forgive the unforgivable
– Genuine forgiveness and repentance does not do away with accountability
Forgiveness is the ongoing work of God’s grace in our lives.
The phrase “forgive and forget” seems to go hand in hand with the common sentiment “get over it,” but neither of these are very helpful when faced with real pain and hurt. As we’ve seen over the past few weeks, with the help of God we can do much more than simply get over the offenses we’ve experienced and committed – we can learn to move through them. Forgiveness, for ourselves and others, can help us move through the pain we have experienced, but it doesn’t mean we have to forget. Instead, through forgiveness, we can allow our past hurt to help us grow and learn.
Questions for Reflection:
How do you respond to the statement that forgiveness and reconciliation are separate?
How can Jesus’ response to the Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17-31) serve as an example to help change the unhealthy forgiveness patterns that many of us have adopted?
What role have boundaries played in your own forgiveness journey?
What might you need to let go of as you seek forgiveness and extend it to others?
