Sermon Title: “Everlasting Father”

December 23, 2018

Forward
For many of us the holiday season can feel rote and uninspired. We hang the same decorations and give the same gifts to the same people each year. We rarely feel amazed and we long for wonder. Our schedules are filled with things in the hope of renewing a sense of awe. But the feeling is fleeting. In this 4-week series (December 2-23) we’ll discover that wonder is not manufactured in a moment, but found in a person. Be amazed with who Jesus is and find yourself filled with wonder!

Title: “Peace Without Quiet”

Mark 4:35-41

If quiet doesn’t equal peace, then maybe peace is not dependent on quiet

Norwegian Academy of Science & History: Since 3600 BC the world has been at peace for a total of 292 years

“Our just man would be scourged, racked, fettered, and at last, after all manner of suffering, will be crucified.” Plato, Republic, Book II

There cannot be peace around us until there is a peace within us.

The absence of war does not equal the presence of peace if there is still chaos and confusion in my soul.

Isaiah 9:6

Do I want to be able to sleep in the storm, or to be terrified by the calm?

Luke 2:14

Isaiah 53:4-6

God, what do you want for me?

As you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What comes to mind when you hear the word peace?

  • Do you identify with the disciples in Mark 4, more afraid of the calm than the storm?

  • What is the difference between peace within and peace around?

  • How might you be creating chaos in your own life?

  • How might God be inviting you into peace?
