Sermon Title: “The Monster Under The Bed”

October 7, 2018

Forward
When we talk about fear we describe it as something that happens to us. We think of fear as something that came upon us without our permission and consumes us. And part of that is true. Our fears dictate the actions that we take. If you don’t learn how to overcome your fear you’ll find yourself sitting on the sidelines of your own life, benched because your brain is caught in the anxiety of its own imagination. While fear can consume us, what we miss is we still have a choice. Fear is a feeling inspired by a thought that might happen in the future. Change your feelings by changing your thinking. Change your thinking, and you’ll overcome your fears.

Title: “The Monster Under the Bed”

“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.” Marcus Aurelius

Spiritual Amnesia: We immediately forget God’s past faithfulness the moment we encounter the next difficulty.

The cost of fear isn’t simply anxiety, the cost of fear is oppression.

There is no fear that has done more damage to your future than the ones that have taken hold of your own soul.

We probably all have a “monster under the bed” memory from childhood – that gripping fear that there was something lurking in the dark, just lying in wait, ready to destroy us. While we may have grown out of the belief of monsters, for most of us, fear still lurks in the dark, waiting to destroy. The fears might be different, but the effect is the same – we are paralyzed. Fear restricts us, rendering us unable to make wise decisions, unable to act on our values, and unable to live a life that matters. Our fear oppresses us, leaving us caged in what is common and comfortable.

Just like the frightened child, unable to move for fear of the monster, we must get up and confront our fear to be free of it. Elijah learns this firsthand in 1 Kings 19, when the angel of God instructs him to get up. If Elijah hadn’t followed these instructions, he would have never received the vision of the future that God had for him. We, like Elijah, have been invited to get up, face our fears, and embrace freedom so that we may live the life God has called us to.
